I am really excited this month to recommend a book I really loved. The Harvard Psychedelic Club, by Don Lattin is a national bestseller and I think it should be. This is a really entertaining and informative book that people from all generations will undoubtedly enjoy and appreciate. Those of us who lived and matured in the psychedelic sixties will find this particularly enjoyable.

Don Lattin does a terrific job of weaving together the stories of Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert (Ram Dass), Huston Smith, and Andrew Weil and how they helped bring about the revolution that “killed the fifties and ushered in a New Age for America.”

Bye Bye Debbie Reynolds and welcome The Beatles. My generation, and every generation since has undergone a metamorphosis and evolution that was born of the psychedelic revolution. This is more than just a history (although it is an excellent history) but it is a tale of experience and feeling . It is a fast-moving entertaining history centered around the major players who were the catalysts for a change in consciousness which had and continues to have a revolutionary effect on how modern men and women perceive reality and live their lives.

This is a great story. And the author does a great job of telling the story and keeping us, the readers, interested and excited about the events and the characters.

The author did his research, but more importantly he captures the feel, the essence, of what was happening not only on the superficial level, but on the many levels affecting both individuals and the society at large.

This was a book that I found totally entertaining. The author brought the characters to life. I was fascinated to learn so much not only about the four major characters, but about Huxley, Kesey, Watt, and so many other important participants in the revolution. I could hardly put the book down. It was a real “page-turner”.

As I said, I loved this book. And whether or not you participated in the psychedelic revolution I think you too will love this book. I really can’t imagine anyone not loving this book.

Some books have the power to help one heal and understand psychological weakness and emotional pain.

But the most important books bring out the truth--which is that the pain is based on falseness—

and therefore resolves the suffering at its illusionary root.

The truth is transmitted through reading the words of the author. It resonates with the reader on a primordial level.

If the writer is living in pain and confusion, then the reader brings that on himself through the words.

If the writer is living truth (non-dualistic presence awareness) then the reader can experience that through the words, if only it is a small taste.

Books by Jed McKenna, Nisargadatta, Balsekar, Wayne Liquorman, Adyashanti , Robert Adams and many others resonate with primordial truth. The words of these authors are pointers to reality, a reality not to be achieved but only remembered once again.

If you enjoyed the above mentioned authors, I promise you will enjoy this as well.

Awakening to the Natural State by John Wheeler

John Wheeler became aware of truth through Sailor Bob, a disciple of Nisargadatta.

This book is a distillation of Sailor Bob's and therefore Nisargadatta's teaching in easily assimilable form.
The basic teaching is: “ present awareness is what we really are.” Everything else is just a three dimensional hologram that is being projected on a screen of untouchable eternal reality.

There is no goal to get somewhere ! What we are and always have been is awareness. Our attention just needs to turn around to that unbinding awareness .

There is no “I” nor is there is a center that holds. If you look deeply and clearly what we have always thought was ourselves has no lasting structure -- the eye sees dream creations of our ever present awareness. There is no solidity. It is, in all reality, no-reality. See beyond the eyes and beyond the cells and atoms and there it is … what I am and what you are and always have been. We have seeming left it for flashy Oz but now returned home to peaceful Kansas, where mother and loved ones reside forever.

The underlying message is that all fear and suffering is caused by the belief in a personal “I”. When the “I” idea is destroyed so are its problems and a peace and innocence takes over.

Try to locate that personal I and it cannot be found. If the I cannot be located then the troubles , anxiety, doubt that exist because of this imaginary thing called “1” also disappear.

This message is so simplistic that it is easily dismissed and overlooked.

The mind wants complications and hard earned rewards for goals. It does not understand simplicity nor can it comprehend its own destruction... silly mind...what does it think it is? Just ignore it and it will go away.

Reading these word of truth are powerful pointers. Being in the presence of one who is decoupled from false self and awakened from the dream even more so.

The Crazy Wisdom of Ganesh Baba: Psychedelic Sadhana, Kriya Yoga, Kundalini, and the Cosmic Energy in Man (Paperback)
— Eve Baumohl Neuhaus

The core teachings and riotous life of the psychedelic yogi Ganesh Bab:

  • Presents the teachings of Ganesh Baba’s “Crea” Yoga, which he derived from the tantric practices of traditional Kriya Yoga
  • Explains the basic exercises for following the Crea (creative) Yoga practice
  • Includes many anecdotes from the colorful life of this “psychedelic” baba

Shri Mahant Swami Ganeshanand Saraswati Giri (ca. 1895-1987) was known to all who loved and studied with him simply as Ganesh Baba. At the age of four, he was brought back from death through an initiation by Lahiri Mahasaya and through this initiation descends from the same Kriya Yoga lineage as Paramahansa Yogananda. He became a swami under his guru Sivananda and later went on to run the Anandamayi Ma ashram. Drawn to the life of the Naga Babas, he became the head of the Ananda Akhara, Naga followers of Lord Shiva who consider cannabis and other entheogens to be the gift of the gods. The unique set of principles and exercises Ganesh Baba developed from the tantric practices of traditional Kriya Yoga and Shivaism became the core of his personal teachings of Crea (for creative) Yoga. Ganesh Baba’s message of systematic synthesis of the spiritual and secular was carefully developed for and embraced by contemporary students in the 1960s, especially those whose path included the use of entheogens.

This book contains the core of Ganesh Baba’s Crea Yoga teachings, from the beginning stages of conscious control of one’s posture, breath, and attention to finally extending one’s awareness to the farthest reaches of the cosmos. Eve Baumohl Neuhaus shows that the life of this scholar and crazy saint was as instructive as his teachings. She includes many personal reminiscences of this inspirational and challenging teacher from her own life and those of fellow students, which demonstrate that Ganesh Baba’s extraordinary life was in keeping with his own role as the embodiment of Lord Ganesh, the remover of obstacles.”

I used to fear death.
As a child I would wake in the middle of the night

fearing I was on the verge of dying.

In the past few years this fear seems to have fallen away
Whether this is good or bad I am unsure.

What I do know with absolute certainty...

I experience a silence (for a lack of a better word) or an activator that has accompanied me for as long as my memory exists.

Beyond all the change of body, thoughts, emotions, this tingling silence seems to just take it all in...not effected in the least.

This is the same in you as it is in me.

This understanding brings me a peace.. a less serious view of relative life

This is for you as well.

Creating comic relief of all the great tragic plays of our existence

The things I thought were stable and real have no real substance...
and therefore no horror.

So with aging I remain ageless

With my many scattered worried thoughts

I remain silent

With all my fleeting emotions
I remain a witness

With my body's death
I remain the same.

This is for you as well.

Love
Tony
